One of the most important aspects of a wedding is the merging of two families into one. Angelica and Dave made sure to incorporate their kids into every aspect of their wedding day. They all got ready together – helping their parents look the best as they walked down the aisle. Dave’s sons even walked Angelica down!! During the ceremony, they each shared vows with the kids before saying their vows to each other. Their love for each other and their family was heartwarming . Each of the kids toasted to their parents and to their beautifully blended family.

If you’ve been keeping up with my last two blog posts (Choosing the Right Photographer and Choosing the Right Photographer Part Two) then you probably have more questions in regards to booking! I guess we’ll call this part three of choosing the right photographer… HIRING! These are questions that we are frequently asked. When considering ANY photographer, we think these are the most crucial questions to answer.

How would you describe your photography style?

Our style is soft and romantic. We primarily work with natural light but work with off camera flashes when needed. We aim to pose our couples in the most flattering matter, yet make it appear natural and unposed.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Believe it or not, all 8 of us work with Canon equipment! We have a variety of lenses, off camera flashes, and flash modifiers.

How do you protect your files?

After each wedding, we backup our files on to THREE separate drives. Yes, really, three! This ensures that if one were to crash, we have your images backed up on two more physical hard drives. We also use an online server (like the Cloud) where we digitally back up each wedding. We store our high resolution files on a website.

How many photos will I receive?

This depends on the the package that you book and there is no exact science to the amount of images you will receive. We typically aim for 100 photos per hour of coverage. Again, this is not an exact number, simply an estimate.

What is your turn around time?

You will receive your edited images 4-6 weeks after your wedding date.

What happens if you’re ill or in an accident?

We are always prepared for the worst case scenario. While we certainly hope it’s not the case, we ALWAYS have at least one other photographer on call for your wedding day.

Can we give you a list of shots or send you our Pinterest board?

While Pinterest is great, we love when our clients allow us to be creative. The other problem with Pinterest boards is that sometimes the poses will not work for everybody. We want you to have images where you look phenomenal! We are happy to look them over and if you have an absolute must have, please do share it with us!

We have a typical family list that we typically work with. Two weeks before your wedding, we ask you to fill out a questionnaire about key family members that you’d like in your photos. If there is a special grouping (i.e. college friends, cousins, and extended family) then please share with us!

Can we share our photos on Facebook/Instagram and with our family/friends?

Absolutely! We LOVE when our clients share our work. All we ask is that you kindly tag us in your photos @shy_heart_studios or #shyheartstudios

Now that we’ve gotten through the nitty gritty, check out this beautiful wedding at Wedgewood at The Retreat photographed by Rachel.

Choosing the Right Photographer Part Two

I told you we’d be back with more tips about hiring the right photographer! While budget, style, and personality are crucial in picking your photographer, the largest deciding factor is trusting your photographer.

It is our job to make you feel beautiful and at ease on your wedding day. We are highly  trained professionals who LOVE what we do. When it’s finally your wedding day, you want to relax after the months and months of planning.

The right photographer will…

  1. Know how to pose you in the most flattering manner. While Pinterest is a wonderful source of inspiration, it can inhibit your photographer from getting creative. We love our art! Another thing that can be challenging with Pinterest photographs is that no two people photograph the same. We want to pose you in a way that is most flattering to you. You should look and feel your best!
  2. Choose the perfect backdrop. Before weddings, we always arrive early to scope out the best spots for you photos. We walk the property to find the most beautiful and scenic spots for your photos.
  3. Find the perfect light. Did you know that photography is actually defined as “the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light…” Isn’t that beautiful? Part of our job is to study light. We track light, observe the color, and choose locations with the most flattering light for photos.

Hopefully this helps shed a little light (see what I did there? eh? okay, moving on…) on wedding photography.

Choosing the Right Photographer

You’ve found the one, picked the dress, chosen the venue… now what? It’s time to select your photographer!

When selecting a photographer there are three main components you should possibly consider:

  1. BUDGET –  Budget is a HUGE part of choosing a photographer. One piece of advice I’ve heard is, “Choosing the right photographer can make your $5,000 wedding look like a $25,000 wedding.” Always. Hire. A. Professional. Just because Uncle Bob has a nice camera, that doesn’t necessarily means he knows how to use it like a professional photographer.
  2. STYLE – This is a whole topic in itself. Do you want a natural style? Romantic? Documentary? We work in a romantic style. While we pose our couples, we try to pose them in the most natural way. We aim for posing that appears effortless, yet is actually very calculated. Another aspect of style is editing. We often get asked if we can edit in a grungier, darker style. While this look is beautiful, that is simply not us. We want to give you timeless images. Our work is edited in a way that appears natural; when you look back at your weddings photos, we want it to look exactly like it did on your wedding day!
  3. PERSONALITY – You’re going to be spending 6+ hours with your wedding photographer. Make sure you’re with a photographer that you trust and get along easily with! When we begin the booking process, we send a “Getting to know YOU” survey. This helps us match you with the right photographer for your wedding!

This just touches the bases of what to look for when booking your photographer! Check in next week for another blog to help you through the booking process!

Getting to know YOU

You’ve found the one, you said yes, now what? It’s time for engagement photos – of course!

We cannot recommend engagement sessions enough! We LOVE getting to know our clients on a personal level. During your engagement session, we love getting to know more about your style and personality. This allows YOU to shine in your photos! Our goal is to capture your love and more importantly, your personality as a couple.

Understanding your personality also helps us on your wedding day to sense the emotions you’re feeling. When you’re stressed, we’re there to help calm you down. When you’re excited, we’re jumping right there with you. We want you to feel comfortable with us! Let’s be honest, sometimes being in front of a camera can be intimidating. We think of engagement sessions as an ice breaker for your wedding day. Since you’re spending 6+ hours with us, we want to make sure you feel absolutely comfortable. You’ll understand our style, posing, and hopefully feel more relaxed in front of the camera. If you’re really nervous about your engagement sessions, we sometimes recommend a small drink to help calm your nerves.

Of course, besides getting to know you, you get beautiful images! Whether you print them, have a sign in album designed, or just share them all of Instagram, you have incredible photos to last a lifetime!

Love is Sweet!

It’s February 15th. Do you know what that means? Yes, it means that Valentine’s day is over, but it also means that Valentine’s Day candy is on sale at Target (you’re welcome). My favorite type of exercise is walking down the sweets aisle. So when holidays are done, I have a blast searching for some sweet treats. I usually buy a few bags and make different types of cookies with them! And do you know what pairs perfectly with cookies? Ice cream!

Like me, Stacy has a sweet tooth. If you ask her if she wants ice cream, she will always say yes! Stacy and Kyle met while studying on the east coast. Their love brought them to California and the delicious ice cream shop, McConnell’s based in Santa Barbara.  When it was time to propose, Kyle knew that he had to include this special place. He took an empty pint of ice cream and hid a ring inside. Of course, she said “YES!” Their wedding was not complete without McConnell’s. They brought in ice cream all the way from Santa Barbara to make their day extra sweet. Instead of cutting cake, Stacy and Kyle served each other delicious ice cream.

Time of my Liiifeeeeee

Weddings can be SO stressful! Choosing the vendors, THE perfect dress, and varying opinions can add to this stress. Your almost to the finish line, but there’s one last detail… your timeline! The timeline can make or break your wedding day.

Too little time will make you feel rushed. Too much time and guests might get bored between events. Our team works with each couple individually to plan a timeline that best suits their needs. We want to make sure that we capture all of those special moments: from putting on the dress to throwing your bouquet. When we discuss timelines, we love to make sure that you will be able to enjoy each and every moment. We want YOU to remember the details that you worked so hard to put together. We typically leave a little wiggle room in case the inevitable happens and somethings runs behind.  We work with the other vendors to keep you on schedule to capture all of those special moments. After months of planning, we want you to feel at ease and know that we have everything under control!

A Year of Milestones

Wow! I can’t believe we’re already three weeks into 2018. It’s crazy how quickly time flies. This year is already shaping up pretty nicely. I have a big feeling that this year will be full of milestones.

As we get further into the year I’m sure there will be tons of graduations, wonderful engagements, beautiful weddings, and babies! For me, I’ve got my eye on the prize: t-minus 5 months until that diploma is in my hands and just two weeks until I kick off the 2018 wedding season. I am beyond pumped!!

If you’re a millennial, like me, you’ve probably experienced a lot of what-the-hell-am-I-doing-with-myself moments. One of the biggest ones for me is witnessing two of my dear friends, Storme and Bryan, tie the knot!! It is so surreal to see the first of your friends get married. I thought to myself, “Woah… I’m old enough to do that?!” The answer is, yep, you sure are!

It was so special to be part of their big day. Storme and Bryan are best friends. They laugh together, cry together, and support each other no matter what. I couldn’t have asked for a better man to marry my best friend. There was mimosas, crazy dancing, and a wonderful support system behind them as they embarked on their new journey together.

Just Beachy

Living in Southern California, we get the best of both worlds! Orange County is only a few hours away from the mountains and just a short little trek to the beach. Another awesome perk is that we have near perfect weather 24/7. That means we can do engagement sessions at the beach nearly year round!!

Karin and Andrew opted to do their engagement session at Little Corona in Newport Beach. This fun loving couple was such a blast! Karin and Andrew kept each other laughing with silly faces and sweet whispers. They braved some waves to cool They cuddled  effortlessly as we watched the sun go down.

Check out their stunning Newport Beach session done by yours truly!

Puppy Love

Here at Shy Heart Studios, we LOVE  animals – especially dogs! Believe it or not, but our studio name was actually inspired by our owner’s dog, Shylo! When our company first began, nothing seemed to stick until Brianna thought, “What about Shy Heart Studios? Kind of like Shylo, but we shorten it to Shy!” She thought she was crazy to name her studio after her beloved fur child, but we all knew that it was perfect. The immense love that Brianna has for Shylo has carried over into her business. Our office mascot sits at our feet while we work, scares the crap out of us when there’s a stranger at the door, and will be there to snuggle us when we’re  having a bad day.

There’s a running joke that Randy is Shylo’s boyfriend – the two are inseperable. Brianna has never seen Shylo love someone (especially a guy!) as much as she loves Randy. When they’re spending time together, Shylo will sit between the two of them and give Brianna the stink eye if she’s too close to Randy. So when it was finally time for Randy to propose to Brianna, he knew that Shylo had to be there, too.

How do you  hide a proposal from a wedding photographer? Let us tell you, it’s nearly impossible, but Randy did it! Brianna wanted to do silly Christmas card photos showing Shylo and her boyfriend together. It was the perfect excuse to  have photographers there to capture the big moment. The three of them posed for some photos and then it was time to pop the question. Randy finally asked and she said “YES!”

Check out Brianna and Randy’s proposal with Shylo done by Melissa and Alex.
